Help me out...is it pronounced "Roo-tan" or "Ru taan" (Like crouton). Also do you know Mark Gilles? I had a nice email chat with him regarding the MK7 GTI

Rhymes with crouton. :)

You mean Mark Gillies? I don't get a lot of face time with the guys on the Communications team, but I have a general sense of who he is.

Yeah that guy. Nice dude, was pretty honest in the email, refreshing not to have the typical corporate response BS.

Last time I had to drive over a fleet car, it was an Audi A3 2.0T, which was a lot more fun.

Don't lie, you signed out a Routan because you wanted to pretend it was one of those REAL classic VW "Hippie Vans". And then you went out and picked up Cheech and just cruised around. RIGHT!?!

Last time I drove a fleet car it was a Ferrari 458 Spider. Hoping the next fleet car I drive will be an M4 :p

Would you mind sharing your thoughts/discussion on the MK7 GTI? I was actually strongly considering the 328i/d Sports Wagon for a while, which I know you were as well, but I ended up just not feeling comfortable with the cost. Even conservatively spec'ed, that wagon gets into the low $50Ks, and can easily reach MSRP of $60K with a few more option boxes checked. Instead, my leading contenders are now the MK7 GTI and MK7 Golf R. While smaller than the Sports Wagon, I believe I will still be able to comfortably fit some cargo or the dogs in the boot, infant seat in the rear, and wife up front with either option and should be able to keep it under $40K at most, even fully loaded. I think (but am honestly not really certain) that the AWD system of the Golf R will be beneficial as a North East/NJ resident. Additionally, I prefer the styling and would appreciate the additional performance (and exhaust note) of the R, even though it probably wouldn't truly be NEEDED. On the other hand, the GTI will be thousands of dollars less and with the Performance Pack still has a limited slip differential up front (not sure how much/if that will help us here in NJ). Heavily leaning towards the R, but the final price/specs/etc haven't even been announced yet so I'm understandably still undecided at this time.

Hey fellow NJ Opponaut. As far as my email with VW went, I just asked of the adaptive suspension would be available on the base S model. They pretty much said for a low volume car like the GTI it is hard to offer everything on every level. Anyway as to the choice conundrum. I was gunning for a wagon or maybe just a 328 sedan, but with a home remodel coming up and saving for kid's college that just wasn't in the cards. The wife digs the GTI, so I figure use that to my advantage. IMO I don't think the R is worth it at that price point. For 35k+ there are so many other cars namely a CPO BMW or Audi that I would rather have. The GTI is not cheap by any means but the 4-door S with the 6MT starts at about 26k including destination add the performance pack (not available until Dec) for 1500 and the lighting package 1k and for around 28500 I would be very happy. You can upgrade to the SE and get leather and other goodies but I really want the old-school cloth seats, I don't need a sunroof and I could care less about a back-up camera and Fender radio for the extra 3 grand. For me the only reason it is worth upgrading to the SE is to add the 800 adaptive suspension which is on top of the 1500 performance pack, add lighting package and you are at 32k real quick. The VW guy said the DCC really only benifits you if you need a more comfortable ride, while the Sport is a little sharper than the standard setup it isn't a drastic difference especially with the LSD. So since this is really just my car to go to work and around town, DCC really is not that important to me. I do want something big enough to carry the kids in a pinch, but we already have a minivan for family duty.
